Retiring from the corporate world at the age of 48 was my deliberate choice to explore the true luxuries and freedom of life. As a result, my transition from an intense professional life to a relaxed, work-free lifestyle was quite smooth, thanks to careful preparation, planning, and effective execution. The joy of setting a benchmark and becoming a trendsetter cannot be expressed in words. Achieving this milestone has not only brought me personal fulfilment but also inspired others, especially Gen Zers, to follow their dreams and carve their own paths. Embracing this new chapter has allowed me to explore newer things and enjoy the freedom of pursuing what truly matters to me.

In our country, the conventional retirement age has typically ranged between 58 and 60 years, shaping our mindset to adhere to this timeline. We rarely think of retiring before this predefined age. The concept of early retirement challenges this norm, leading people to become curious about the reasons and future plans behind such a decision. This note aims to be an eye-opener for all those still caught between the demands of work and the allure of true freedom.
As I look back on five years of life without the daily grind, I have come to appreciate the lessons this new chapter of my life has taught me. These lessons aren't just about filling time; they're about finding meaning, happiness, and growth in a work-free lifestyle. Here's what I've learned.
1/ The Value of Time
Time is perhaps the most precious resource. Unlike money or material possessions, it cannot be earned, borrowed, or replaced once it has passed.
Without the constraints of a typical work schedule, you begin to realize just how precious time is. You gain the freedom to allocate your hours as you wish, allowing for deeper exploration of hobbies, interests, and relationships. This freedom fosters greater self-awareness and a stronger connection with what truly matters to you.
2/ Rediscovering My True Self

When my intense professional life was no longer the primary focus, I gained the freedom to reconnect with my passions, interests, and core values. I spent more time on activities I used to love but never had the time or opportunity to fully explore—like hiking, gardening, writing/blogging, traveling, and deepening my understanding of wealth-building strategies in the domain of finance. This journey of rediscovery has taught me the invaluable lesson of understanding what genuinely brings joy and fulfilment into my life.
3/ Peace of Mind

In a world where name, fame, power, and status often take centre stage, it is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of these external accolades. We often become so engrossed in chasing money that we forget where to stop. While there is no limit to accumulating wealth, it should not come at the cost of mental peace.
There are numerous examples showing that even those who reach the heights of fame and fortune continue to struggle with inner turmoil. These stories remind us that material success does not guarantee happiness. On the contrary, the pressure to maintain a certain image or status often results in grater stress and dissatisfaction.
Some individuals, after achieving name, fame, power, and status, come to realize that there is nothing as valuable as peace of mind. They shift their focus to meaningful relationships, personal growth, and mental well-being, letting go of societal pressures to find joy in life’s simple pleasures and the present moment.
Inner peace means feeling calm and free from stress and worry. Without it, even great success or fame can feel empty and unfulfilling.
I was fortunate to realize in my early forties that true success can never be measured by accolades or status, as they inevitably fade with time. Instead, it is about the contentment you feel, the love you share, and the peace you carry within. While societal pressure may push you to chase recognition and status, remember that these are temporary and short-lived. True wisdom lies in securing life’s essentials and letting go of excess, unnecessary things. The most meaningful journey is the one that leads to inner peace. I am glad I chose that path and found it to be the most rewarding.
4/ The Joy of Giving Up
The joy of stepping away from the conventional path gave me the freedom to prioritize personal fulfilment over endless accumulation. My intention was never to hold onto my position merely to make more money or to keep building others' businesses. Instead, I always knew that I would one day step back from my established career to make room for new talent, creating opportunities for others when my time was done—and that’s exactly what I did. Living this dream has been a blessing beyond words.
Even after five years, this decision stands out as one of my most fulfilling achievements, and the impact I made will always hold a special place in my heart.
5/ Breaking Free from the Myth

There is a common myth that superannuation or early retirement inevitably leads to a reduction in cash flow, forcing individuals to downsize their lifestyle drastically to sustain their future livelihood. This misconception often leads people to prolong their careers far beyond what they desire, fearing financial insecurity. However, this scenario generally applies to those who haven't taken proactive steps to plan for their future. With foresight, discipline, and sound financial planning—such as making wise investment decisions, managing expenses carefully, and creating a sustainable income strategy—the idea of early retirement transforms from a fearful proposition into an empowering reality.
By preparing properly, early retirement can allow one to live not only comfortably but fully, enjoying meaningful experiences and life’s true luxuries without compromising financial peace.
6/ The Power of Lifelong Learning

With more time on your hands, the opportunity to explore new fields, skills, and passions becomes a central focus. Whether it's mastering new financial techniques, honing a craft, or diving into literature, work-free living can be a gateway to continuous learning and personal growth.
For me, learning never stops. One of the most rewarding experiences after leaving the corporate world was completing a course in financial analytics. This journey has not only enhanced my skills but also deepened my understanding of the investment landscape. It serves as a powerful reminder that learning is a lifelong adventure, full of opportunities for growth and self-improvement, not just a means to build a career. Knowledge is power, and the more you learn, the better equipped you become to make meaningful decisions about the direction of your life.
7/ Putting Skills and Passion to Work
When skill converges with passion, achieving financial success becomes a natural outcome. I speak from personal experience, having seen it unfold in my own journey after transitioning from a career of serving others.
Looking back, I feel proud that I made the right decision at the right time, as it has allowed me to live with purpose and pursue what truly brings me joy.
My knowledge in financial data analytics, risk management, expense management, coupled with a commitment to staying informed on policy shifts and geopolitical trends, continues to fuel my passion. This dynamic approach not only keeps me energized but also deepens my drive to achieve impactful outcomes.
8/ Rediscovering Life Beyond Materialism

The truth of life is that we have become so accustomed to materialistic possessions and social slavery that we forget to experience the wonderful journey of our lives until it becomes very late. I was no different, but I quickly realized that competing in the race of comparison is meaningless. It's a waste of my valuable time.
Instead, it is better to fill our lives with experiences rather than things. Collect memories to share, not stuff to show. Life is short—let’s live it fully!

9/ Embracing Simplicity
In the absence of work-related stress, I have been able to embrace a simpler yet enriching lifestyle.
To me embracing simplicity means finding contentment in life's basic pleasures and letting go of unnecessary complexities. It involves prioritizing what truly matters—relationships, health, and personal growth—while discarding distractions that cause stress or clutter. By simplifying my environment, routines, and mindset, I can experience a greater sense of peace and clarity, that allows me to focus on the people and activities that bring genuine joy. Ultimately, embracing simplicity is about living with intention and cultivating a life that aligns with my deepest values.
10/ Prioritizing Health and Well-Being
With more time on my hands, I focused on my health. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices became central to my daily routine. This commitment to well-being has been one of the most valuable lessons I've learned.
11/ Reconnecting with My Inner Child

Stepping away from the relentless pace of my professional life gave me the priceless opportunity to reconnect with my inner child—a part of me that had long been buried beneath responsibilities and expectations. It was like rediscovering a forgotten treasure, filled with joy, curiosity, and an unfiltered sense of wonder. I began to see the world through a lens of possibility, embracing simple pleasures, indulging in creativity, and finding delight in moments that once seemed mundane. This journey not only revived my spirit but also reminded me of the boundless potential that comes from living genuinely, free from the pressures of societal norms. Reclaiming this childlike essence has been my most empowering experience, allowing me to enjoy life in its purest form.
"The time is now. The day is today. Life is a short trip—so live it fully while you can, because there's no turning back."
12/ Finding Purpose in Volunteering
While I no longer have to work for my living, but I still wanted to contribute to my community. Volunteering became a significant part of my life, allowing me to use my skills and experience to make a difference. This experience taught me that a sense of purpose can come from helping others.
13/ The Impact of Meaningful Connections
Stepping away from a traditional work environment can lead to a significant shift in once social landscape. Hence, it's essential to actively maintain and build relationships, whether through volunteering, community groups, or simply spending more quality time with loved ones. Social connections play a critical role in maintaining happiness and mental health.
Without having the constraint of work schedules, I found more time for my family and loved ones. Whether it's spending a weekday afternoon with my parents or taking a road trip with old friends or meeting up with childhood friends for a cup of coffee, I've learned the value of nurturing relationships.
14/ Appreciating Solitude

Being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely. Learning to enjoy your own company brings a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. Solitude provides the opportunity for deep introspection, creativity, and a closer connection with your inner self. It can also help you cultivate a sense of peace and contentment, free from the external noise of office politics, deadlines, and societal pressures.
The beauty of enjoying your own company lies in the richness it brings to your life, allowing you to embrace each day with intention and purpose.
15/ The Joy of Mentorship
Breaking free from the conventional structure has gifted me the opportunity to support and

mentor my child on her career aspirations. It has been an immensely fulfilling experience and a privilege that many cannot enjoy while being caught up by the demands of their job responsibilities.
During my working years, I wasn’t always able to dedicate the quality time she deserved, but now I’ve been able to make up for it. My role is to keep her motivated, guide her with ideas, and help her with direction, research, and market information as she navigates her aspirations, decisions, and opportunities. This has allowed me to share my experiences and wisdom while watching her grow on her unique path. Moreover, it is my constant effort to help her manage stress and anxiety, enabling her to stay focused on her core areas and pursue her goals with confidence and clarity.
16/ The Importance of Structure and Routine
While the freedom of a work-free life is liberating, having some form of structure is crucial. Creating a daily routine helps maintain balance and ensures you don't drift into aimlessness. Whether it's exercise, learning, volunteering, or spending time with family, having a plan helps maintain a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Leaving traditional work was never the end for me; instead, it was a new beginning filled with opportunities for growth, joy, and contentment.
Being able to live life on one's own terms is a true privilege, and I feel deeply fortunate to be living it.
